Picking a season without guessing

Peak weeks are crowded on purpose. Here is how to choose a beach, mountain, lake, or desert week you will still like on day three.

The photo is Hogback Mountain in Vermont, which is what people mean when they say “we should go for the leaves.” It is beautiful, and it is also a reminder that the pretty week is the expensive, busy week. Luxury, if the word means anything, is often the week on either side, when the trees are still good and the driveway is yours.

You do not have to guess. The pattern repeats.

Beaches

July and the weeks around big holidays are when everyone who can go, goes. That includes the Fourth, and it includes the school spring breaks, which are not in summer and still feel like it. If your heart is set on those dates, book the house early and expect company on the sand.

The pleasanter bet on a place like Siesta Key is late spring or early fall: warm water, fewer towels, a restaurant that can seat you. Hurricane season is real from June through November. Have a boring indoor backup and do not pretend a listing can promise the weather.

Mountains and leaves

New England color moves from north to south and from ridge to valley. In Stowe it often shows up high in late September and in town in early October, and a warm year slides it. Read Stowe when the leaves turn before you lock a Saturday. Midweek is kinder. The same hills in June are green, quiet, and a perfectly good trip if you wanted a porch more than a postcard.

Ski season is not one thing. Early December can be a brown edge and a lot of hope. March often has the sun and the snow at the same time. If you only ski once, March is the week to argue for.

Lakes

June has bugs and long light. July and August have the boats and the families, which is either the point or the thing you came to avoid. September is the secret month on a lot of northern lakes: the water is still swimmable for the brave, the mornings are cold, and the light looks like the photograph you wanted in August without the wake from every rental pontoon. A lake weekend in Castleton is built on that idea.

Desert

Joshua Tree is an October-to-April landscape if you like being outside. Summer is for people who know what they are doing and go out at dawn. Winter nights freeze. The season you want is “mild days, cold nights, dark sky,” and you pack for both halves of that sentence.

Pick the week, then the house

Choose the season before you choose the sofa. A perfect house in the wrong week is a parking story. When the week is real, search Airren for that place and those dates, and read the total in INR before you tell the group. The right week is a bigger upgrade than the fancier kitchen.

Packing for a house, not a hotel

A rented house will not hand you an iron, endless towels, or a front desk. Pack for the building you booked, and leave the rest.
