Weekend escapes

A lake weekend in Castleton

Castleton and Lake Bomoseen are the quiet version of a Vermont weekend. Three nights, a dock if you can get one, and no candle-shop itinerary.

Castleton is a small college town west of Rutland, on the way to Lake Bomoseen. That sentence is the sell. This is not Stowe. There is no recreation path full of people in new fleece, and the weekend is better for it if what you wanted was water and a house, not a village to browse.

The photograph is the lake in early fall, which is also the version I would book. Summer is for swimming. September is for sitting there.

What you do, which is not much

Friday is the arrival and the water, in that order. If you land in the late afternoon, do not invent an activity. Put the bags down, walk to the shore, and let the drive end. Rutland is the grocery stop, about fifteen or twenty minutes away. Do it before you reach the house so Saturday morning is not an errand.

Saturday is the lake. A house with a dock, or a short path to one, is the difference between a lake weekend and a weekend near a lake. Driving to a public launch every time someone wants to look at the water gets old by noon. If you are renting a boat, sort that out with the host before you arrive. “There’s a lake” and “you can get on the lake” are not the same listing.

Hubbardton Battlefield is the quiet historical walk if someone in the group needs a destination. It is a hillside and a story, not a museum day. Go if the weather is good and you have already had your coffee. Skip it if the dock is working. You did not come to optimize.

Sunday is a long breakfast and the drive south. Cook the good eggs. Leave while the light is still the light in the photo, not the dark of a Sunday night on the highway.

Summer bugs, September light

June on a northern lake can be beautiful and buggy. July is boats and families and the reason some people book lakes. If your group wants to swim all afternoon, that is the season, and you should want the company. If your group wants to read and swim once, aim for September: cold mornings, water that has not forgotten August, and fewer people who brought a speaker.

October is past swimming for most of us and still a good porch. Pair it with the notes in picking a season if you are arguing about dates. If you wanted the famous Vermont instead, Stowe is a different weekend and a longer reservation lead time. Do not try to see both.

Lake Hollow, if you want the dock

Search Castleton on Airren. Lake Hollow is the house for this exact idea: the lake, the quiet, and a place to leave your shoes by the door. The quote is in INR. Book the three nights, not two. You will spend the first evening remembering how to sit still, and that only works if there is a morning after it.

Weekend escapes

A long weekend in Asheville

Three nights in Asheville with one mountain morning, one downtown afternoon, and enough porch time that the drive home does not feel like the trip.

Weekend escapes

Cape Cod in three nights

Stay on the upper Cape, in East Falmouth, and skip the crawl to the outer beach. A bike path, one beach, and a kitchen are the whole weekend.
