Weekend escapes

Cape Cod in three nights

Stay on the upper Cape, in East Falmouth, and skip the crawl to the outer beach. A bike path, one beach, and a kitchen are the whole weekend.

The lighthouse is Nobska, in Woods Hole, which is the sentence that should decide your Cape weekend. If you stay in East Falmouth, you are on the upper Cape. The beach, the bike path, and the ferry are close. Provincetown is not your errand. Trying to “do the Cape” from the bridges to the tip in three nights is how you spend Saturday looking at brake lights on Route 6.

Pick a town and stay there.

Why the upper Cape is the weekend

East Falmouth and Falmouth put you near Old Silver Beach and the Shining Sea Bikeway, which runs from North Falmouth down toward Woods Hole along the water. It is flat. It is the right activity for a group that includes someone who wants exercise and someone who wants an ice cream at the end. Rent bikes in town if the house does not have them. Do not bring four bikes on the car unless you already live that life.

Nobska is a short visit: the light, the view toward Martha’s Vineyard, and then you leave before it becomes a tour. Woods Hole has the ferry. If one person needs an island stamp, take the passenger boat to the Vineyard and walk, or don’t take the car at all. A car reservation on a summer ferry is a different project, and it will eat the day you thought was free.

Friday, and the bridges

The Bourne and Sagamore bridges are the front door. Friday afternoon in July is the mistake everyone makes once. If those are your dates, cross earlier than you think is reasonable, or accept that the first night is the driveway and a pizza. September, after Labor Day, is the weekend I would actually book: the water is still fine, the light is softer, and the bridges remember how to be roads.

Buy seafood once, from a place that sells it for home, and cook the other nights. You rented a house so you would not eat every meal at a picnic table waiting for your name. The kitchen is the amenity. Use it.

Saturday on the path, Sunday on the beach

Do the bikeway on Saturday morning while the air is cool. Old Silver, or whichever beach is closest to the house, can be the afternoon. You do not need a second beach for comparison. Bring chairs if the listing does not show any. Cape sand is a place to stay, not a place to stand.

Sunday morning is coffee and a walk, then the drive back while the day is still a day. Three nights means you slept there twice for real and once on the edge. That is enough Cape. The outer beaches will be there another year, when you have a week. There is a warmer, flatter version of this impulse on Siesta Key if the Gulf is what you wanted and New England was the compromise.

Stay on the upper Cape

Search East Falmouth on Airren. Falmouth Bay is the house that matches this map: upper Cape, a kitchen, and no ambition to reach the tip before lunch. Quotes are in INR. Look at the total for your actual Friday, including the hours you will lose to the bridge if you pick the famous week.

Castleton and Lake Bomoseen are the quiet version of a Vermont weekend. Three nights, a dock if you can get one, and no candle-shop itinerary.
