Asheville is a good three-night trip and a cramped two-night one. Fly into AVL and a lot of the houses are twenty minutes from the curb. You can be on a porch before you have finished resenting the airport. Use that. Do not schedule yourself into a corner.
The parkway in the photograph is the Saturday. The rest of the weekend should be lighter than the picture.
Get the groceries on the way to the house. Downtown is walkable and the River Arts District is the easy evening if you are not wrecked: studios, a short wander, dinner somewhere you do not have to drive afterward if the house is close. If the house is in the hills, eat near the house or cook. A Friday night shuttle between “the scene” and a dark driveway is how people start the weekend already tired.
Do not book Biltmore for Friday night. You will not enjoy it.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the move. South toward Craggy, or north if the weather and the leaves suggest it. You do not need a trail with a reputation. A pullout, a short walk, and a long look at the ridges will do more than a summit you have to earn with a group that did not come to train.
Go in the morning. Afternoon thunderstorms are a summer habit and fog can erase the view you drove for. Have a cafe back in town as the backup, and do not treat the backup as a failure.
Biltmore is the other “big” option, and it is a half-day with a ticket price that is not a whim. Do it if the group wants one formal outing. Skip it if you came for the porch. You cannot do the house, the garden, and the parkway and still feel like you were on vacation. Pick one.
Downtown in the late afternoon is enough city: a bookstore, a beer if that is your group, and then home. Asheville’s food reputation is real and it is also a reason people overbook. One good dinner is a weekend. Three reservations is a business trip.
Sleep in. Cook the eggs you bought on Friday. The Saturday farmers market is the market, so do not plan your Sunday around it. If you want it, go Saturday morning and let the parkway be shorter.
Leave after lunch. There is no scenic prize for sitting in Sunday evening traffic so you can say you stayed until dusk. Two full days and three nights is the shape. You will have unpacked, used the kitchen, and still gotten home at a human hour.
If you are choosing the week, fall is the famous one and midweek foliage is kinder than the Saturday everyone else picked. June is green and quiet and perfectly legitimate.
Search Asheville on Airren and look for a house you can actually unwind in, not a condo that makes you go out for every meal. Asheville Ridge is the one that fits this weekend: close enough to land, far enough to hear the night. The quote is in INR. Read it before you promise the group a view.

Weekend escapes
Castleton and Lake Bomoseen are the quiet version of a Vermont weekend. Three nights, a dock if you can get one, and no candle-shop itinerary.
Weekend escapes
Stay on the upper Cape, in East Falmouth, and skip the crawl to the outer beach. A bike path, one beach, and a kitchen are the whole weekend.
